By the blessings of God, an
evangelical, independent, confessional Lutheran congregation has
recently started in Des Moines. With the establishment of Saint Mary Evangelical Lutheran Church, a
biblical, confessional, liturgical Word and Sacrament Ministry is now available in the
greater metropolitan Des Moines
area. We selected our name Saint Mary, after the Stadtkirche (City Church) in Wittenberg Germany, known as the "Mother Church of the Reformation." More officially named Saint Mary's Church (Marienskirche),
that
historic City Church was where Martin Luther preached regularly.
By the very name of our congregation, we acknowledge our
Lutheran heritage and the contributions and service of
women.

When examining the Marys in the
Bible, there is something more common about them than just
their name. They all listened in faith to the Word of God.
The Virgin Mary listened to the messenger and the Good News
from God about her miraculous conception and the birth of
Jesus. She later listened to her son, Jesus, at a wedding
reception and tells a servant to do what He says. Martha's
sister Mary is commended by Jesus in her listening to Him
and His Word, which "would not be taken from her." Mary
Magdalene is comforted and reassured with Jesus' Word "Mary"
in the garden of the empty tomb on Easter morn. Please visit
the About Our Name page to learn
more about the Marys in the Holy Bible!
